Peter Molyneux: ‘Artificial Intelligence Will Bring a Big Change to Games!’

The gaming industry legend, also known for his fabrications, now believes that artificial intelligence will drastically disrupt the future of games.

Fable, Dungeon Keeper, Populous, Black & White, Theme Park – just a few examples of what Peter Molyneux has worked on. He’s now also working in the games industry (22cans), and Eurogamer asked him a question to which he gave a thought-provoking answer (“Where will the video game world be in 25 years?”) that would lead us to conclude that he’s certainly going in that direction:

“AI is going to be a real game changer. There will come a time when AI will be used to create huge parts of a game – AI-generated characters, animations, dialog, voice-overs, there is so much that AI will be able to do. For example, you will be able to create a game from a single prompt like ‘make a battle royale set on a pirate ship’ and your AI will go and do that for you,” Molyneux said.

This raises the question of what will happen to those who work in the games industry, because if many people really do rely on technology rather than human labor, then more will lose their jobs. Even animators could be in trouble, because if AI takes over here too, it could lead to a decline in quality, and despite the state of the games industry, the trend of people losing their jobs every week will continue (we’ve already seen this week with the Until Dawn Remake developers being made redundant even though the game hasn’t even been released yet).

Molyneux also said that Hollywood will continue to be impressed by the games, so more adaptations could be made. There have been several successful examples of this recently (with the Fallout and The Last of Us series, and now with Mario’s successful animated movie)… we can at least agree with that.
