What Is PSSR Good For? Here’s Everything You Need to Know About the New PS5 Pro Tech!

TECH NEWS – PSSR, or PS5 Pro’s flagship technology, could theoretically provide a considerable performance boost in games. In addition, PS VR2 can also benefit from it…

After a long wait and a flurry of rumours, the PS5 Pro has finally been announced! We know the price, the date and the technical specifications. However, for gamers, one of the most important aspects besides the high price is the gaming performance. All signs point to it offering a significant improvement, thanks in part to the new technology that debuts in the new PS5 Pro. In the following section, we will talk about PlayStation PSSR technology, which is similar to NVIDIA’s DLSS.

Let’s start with the basics: PSSR stands for “PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution.” What do you know? As the PlayStation blog explains, it’s “an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.” This effectively helps many games debuting on PS5 Pro run at 4K and 60 FPS with improved ray tracing capabilities.

CNET learned exclusive details about the PS5 Pro when they were able to test the device live. They emphasize that this technology works in the entire game library without patches. In other words, you’ll see automatic performance improvements in the games in your library without having to apply an update. Digital Foundry previously noted that the technology is “potentially incredible” because it allows games to be upscaled from 1080p to 4K. Of course, the “even stronger” ray tracing must also be added to this equation, and the FPS will also be higher. In addition, it has been confirmed that this technology will be used in future PlayStation VR2 titles (see below).

PS5 lead designer Mark Cerny said gamers can expect “incredible graphics at high frame rates.”

Also worth mentioning in this regard is PS5 Pro Game Boost, “which can be applied to over 8,500 backwards-compatible PS4 games that can be played on PS5 Pro.” This new feature can “stabilize or improve the performance of compatible PS4 and PS5 games.” We can’t forget to mention the label you’ll often see on games: PS5 Pro Enhanced. This indicates the games that have received a patch to apply the new console development, which is related to the better resolution and higher FPS rate.

How will PSSR affect PS VR2?

It’s true that this information was not disclosed in Sony’s official broadcast. Still, CNET also confirmed that the benefits of PSSR graphics will also be available in PlayStation Virtual Reality experiences. Specifically, it was Mark Cerny himself, the face of the new device’s video presentation, who shared the information: “In the future, it will also work with PS VR2 games.”

The CNET article did not address the use of PSSR in PS VR2 titles. So expect Sony to share more details about this in the future. However, PlayStation will undoubtedly continue to support gamers who prefer virtual reality by offering visual enhancements to their adventures, providing an even more immersive VR experience.

In addition to the PS VR2, PlayStation also wants to make a splash with the technical features of the recently presented PS5 Pro. But how will this be reflected in the experiences? Let’s start with the fact that the new model wants to reach the 60 FPS standard for games, so it also promises 4K resolution. If that wasn’t enough, Sony highlighted visual improvements in both distant objects and reflections. The latter will benefit significantly from advanced ray tracing. It is certain that we will hear a lot more about the PS5 Pro and its potential capabilities in the coming weeks…
