Super Smash Bros’ Creator Makes a Surprising Statement – Are All His Games Just “Waste of Time”?! [VIDEO]

The Super Smash Bros and Kirby master admitted that you could have done literally anything else with your limited time on Earth…

Super Smash Bros Ultimate and Kirby creator Masahiro Sakurai is apologizing to players who have spent thousands of hours playing his games, suggesting that it was “time wasted” in some ways.

The apology came courtesy of the famous director’s latest episode, Creating Games. In doing so, he came to terms with the idea that playing a game is essentially a cost that players must consider. “Play time – especially how it’s conceived before starting a game – is better thought of as a cost of sorts,” he explains.

“In the modern world, you’re constantly competing with everything else,” Sakurai continues. “It’s a battle for people’s time. Even if someone has lots of free time on their hands, that means something different now than it did in the past.”

“There are always things to do. The question is: how do people choose to spend the time?”

It’s funny how the notoriously time-consuming Vampire Survivors and Powerwash Simulator footage plays in the background while Sakurai says all this. According to the director, phone screens are probably the biggest threat to people’s free time because there are practically no obstacles. You can’t just pick up a console in a supermarket line; you have to concentrate while playing, and games can take significantly more time. According to Sakurai, the appeal of a game has to be able to overcome these obstacles.

Regardless, after realizing the war for people’s attention, Sakurai lets out a huge “I’m so sorry!” – to the players who spent thousands of hours fighting in Super Smash Bros, because – as he explained – they could have spent their precious time on literally anything else…
