Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2: 60 FPS on Consoles Is Possible!

Sixty frames per second on consoles in a game from Warhorse Studios? There’s a good chance, because the studio is very optimistic about it…

WCCFTech interviewed Warhorse Studios’ Executive Producer Maritn Klima at Gamescom, who revealed a few things: the game will run on the latest engine (not Unity and not Unreal Engine; the Czechs go the other way!), it will support upscaling technologies on PC, and there’s a chance that the first-person action-RPG will run at 60 FPS on consoles…

“We work closely with Crytek, so we have access to the latest version of the CryEngine. Of course, we also wanted to keep our customization from Kingdom Come: Deliverance. In the end, the engine that we have is not quite the same engine that Crytek is using for Hunt: Showdown, but it is very close. We support the upscaling technology in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, both Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR. We do not use hardware ray tracing, CryEngine has very good software ray tracing.

The first Kingdom Come: Deliverance was quite heavy on PCs. There were a lot of things that we were just doing brute force, and I think the extra time we had to develop this sequel allowed us to do a lot of optimization, parallelization, and better use of CPUs. Obviously the hardware is faster now and the consoles have more memory and better performance. Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is not finished yet, so we’re still working on it, but 60fps on consoles is not out of reach for us,” said Klíma.

Warhorse PR manager Tobias Stolz-Zwilling confirmed that the software ray tracing Klíma mentioned is actually an advanced version of SVOGI (Sparse Voxel Octree Global Illumination). SVOGI was used in the first Kingdom Come: Deliverance as well as some other CryEngine titles (e.g. Snow, War of Rights) and will be used on consoles in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 will be released on February 11th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC.
