Peter Renaday, Voice of Duncan in Dragon Age: Origins, Passes Away

For example, the ageless voice can be as familiar to an age group as the voice of Master Splinter in Teenage Ninja Turtles.

Peter Renaday’s death was announced on Twitter by a colleague and friend, Townsend Coleman. Renaday was a regular voice actor in many television and video game projects: “Guys, I am devastated to learn this morning of the passing of our dear sensei, Peter Renaday, yesterday. Pete was one of the most genuine, salt of the earth people I have ever known and I will miss him dearly. I had the privilege of visiting with him a month ago and he was as vibrant as ever, and at 89 just as endearingly silly, smart, and talented as I’ve always known him to be. Ugh, this is hard…a Disney legend and our dear Master Splinter – rest in peace my sweet friend,” Coleman wrote.

It’s not yet known how Renaday died, but TMZ reported that local authorities checked on him on Sunday, September 8, when they received a call informing them that his body had been found. According to them, Renaday had fallen asleep due to natural causes, so there is no need for a forensic investigation into the matter, i.e. no murder or suicide.

We’ve already mentioned that Duncan’s voice was his in Dragon Age: Origins, but it was also his voice in Assassin’s Creed and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations (he was the voice of Al-Mualim). He voiced Master Splinter in the 1987 animated Teenage Ninja Turtles movie, and has had many animated and video game roles, from Samurai Jack to Gears of War 3. He can also be heard as Abraham Lincoln in Disney’s Hall of Presidents, delivering the Gettysburg Address. Renaday was married to Florence “Flo” June until her death in 2011. She worked as a secretary in the music department at Walt Disney Studios for 35 years, and her voice can be heard alongside Renaday in the 1973 film The Sounds of Christmas.

Renaday was also remembered by BioWare: “BioWare is saddened to learn of the passing of Peter Renaday, the talented voice actor behind one of Dragon Age’s favorite Grey Wardens, Duncan. His performance in DA: Origins brought his character to life, and his passing has left an impact on our community. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

God rest his soul.
