MOVIE NEWS – Deadpool has overtaken Chris Hemsworth’s Thor on the list of the MCU’s highest-grossing characters.
Deadpool, the professional cursing character and expert in breaking the fourth wall, is still breaking records months after the release of his biggest movie to date. After the groundbreaking success of the latest instalment in the franchise, Deadpool & Wolverine, the red-clad superhero became Marvel’s second highest-grossing character. Not bad for a superhero who has only appeared in three films out of a universe of over 30 works!
Deadpool & Wolverine brought in enough money at the box office to put the character near the top of the list of commercially successful superheroes. 2024 was his year, and he proved it with a risky, groundbreaking project in many ways. One thing remained, however: the rough-and-tumble character provided audiences with precisely the kind of cheek-searing anarchy they came for. Fortunately, it paid off, and the audience understood the intention of Ryan Reynolds and his colleagues to make the cinema a refreshing crossover. Add to that the many, many cameos and references to popular culture in general, and you have a fan spectacle that is still selling tickets almost two months after its premiere.
Deadpool is the second most successful superhero in the Marvel universe after Ryan Reynolds’ character grossed a total of $2.8 billion over three films.
The Deadpool franchise is only surpassed by Tom Holland’s version of Spider-Man, which grossed $3.9 billion at the global box office. Spider-Man is still amazingly popular: the films of the Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland versions shown in cinemas collected a total of 10.2 billion dollars!
Deadpool & Wolverine leads the ranking of the most successful R-rated films of all time
The record-breaking third film in the Deadpool franchise is the “most Deadpool movie” ever. It’s not too serious in tone, and that’s exactly what audiences expected after trailers showed the title character indulging in his usual antics and making fun of everyone in the universe where the film is set.
Deadpool & Wolverine was a gamble by Disney to release a high-profile R-rated film. It quickly became the most successful R-rated film of all time, taking over the title previously held by 2019’s Joker. Deadpool isn’t just a member of Marvel’s elite. However, he is also an elite member of the R-rated universe since the character occupies three of the first five places in the list of the most successful films that have “content that may not be suitable for people under 17”.
