Wait a minute: an action-RPG migrates from PlayStation Vita to multiple, higher-reach platforms with Sony holding the rights…?

Freedom Wars was released on PlayStation Vita in 2014. Now Dimps is remastering the game, which will be coming to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PC and Nintendo Switch, but the publisher will not be Sony Interactive Entertainment, but Bandai Namco! There’s an explanation for that, but first let’s see what Freedom Wars Remastered is all about…

For the crime of existing, your 1,000,000-year sentence begins today. Freedom Wars Remastered features enhancements such as 4K resolution, improved textures and 60 frames per second performance on PlayStation and PC, an overhauled weapon crafting system and other gameplay improvements, as well as additional difficulty settings. Improved graphics bring environments and characters to life, while refined controls make gameplay more responsive and intuitive. Join up to seven players in Freedom Wars’ co-op mode. Work together to rescue citizens and take down massive kidnappers in fast-paced, action-packed missions. With dynamic teamwork and strategy, you’ll face constantly evolving challenges that require skill, coordination, and quick thinking.

Takashi Tsukamoto, director of Freedom Wars at Dimps (now the development producer on the remaster), told PlayStation Blog Japan why this project is being made and how Bandai Namco got the publishing rights: “We wanted to make a sequel ever since the game was released 10 years ago, but the opportunity never came. This time we were lucky enough to have the opportunity, and with Bandai Namco Entertainment producing while we were developing, and it being the 10th anniversary, the timing was right to do something. When we [Dimps] received the license from Sony Interactive Entertainment to create a remastered version and were looking for a publisher, Bandai Namco Entertainment kindly stepped forward and offered to publish it.

Freedom Wars Remastered will be released on January 10th for PlayStation 5, PC, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. Check out the first image for a comparison between the original and the remaster.
