Swen Vincke, the father of Baldur’s Gate 3, does not rule out developing a game in the Ultima fantasy RPG saga, but he would also like to develop a Fallout game…
Have you ever dreamed of the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3 developing a game for a franchise you love? Larian Studios has looked at several opportunities outside of Dungeon and Dragons in the past. But now we know that they are working on two new RPGs, and it is not known if they will be fantasy games. However, the director of the fantasy RPG GOTY 2023 is very fond of the franchise that played a central role in the development of RPGs as we know them today.
The Ultima saga is a game series that is of great interest to Larian Studios CEO Swen Vinck. The developer does not rule out the possibility of making a video game. Baldur’s Gate 3 screenwriter Adam Smith said in an interview with PC Gamer. “The thing about Ultima for me was, 4, 5, and 6 I absolutely love, but 7, it might be my favorite game,” he said.
One of the challenges of developing a modern Ultima RPG is discovering the virtue system and creative problem-solving.
“What if you have to try and find peaceful solutions? That’s really interesting, but that happens across the board in RPGs now, so it’s not as interesting a question as it was,” wonders Smith (via Gamesradar).
In case you’re curious and unfamiliar with the Ultima series, the franchise was at its peak in the 1980s, and starting with the fourth instalment, it shifted to a more philosophical approach, with a morality system where we had to deal with themes such as honesty, compassion and the justice. Ultima VII is one of the most important RPGs of the 1990s, influencing Ultima Online (1997).
The director of Baldur’s Gate 3 loves the Ultima series
On the possibility of an Ultima game in the future, Vincke says, “Never say never,” because the BG3 screenwriter says he loves the franchise created by Richard Garriott. In fact, we reported months ago that the director of BG3 said that he would have tried to make a Fallout or Ultima RPG if he hadn’t gotten the license from Wizards of the Coast: “It could have been Ultima, it could have been Fallout, it could have been Baldur’s Gate. We didn’t have much of a choice,” said the head of Larian Studios last July.
