Batman Fans Are Outraged: Why Did They Have to Change the Name of this Character?!

MOVIE NEWS – Batman fans are furious over controversial name change that no one asked for…

A legendary Batman character’s name has been changed, and fans aren’t happy about it. The DC universe has many iconic characters, especially when it comes to Gotham City’s protector, Bruce Wayne, aka Batman. In fact, we can rightly say that the figure is arguably the most popular comic book hero of all time.

However, the caped crusader wouldn’t be such a great hero if there weren’t some equally legendary villains like Joker, Harley Quinn, Riddler, Catwoman and many others. The topic of today’s conversation is Oswald Cobblepot, aka Penguin, who is worth mentioning.

This week, The Penguin debuts in America and Europe on Max, and in the UK on Sky Atlantic. It stars Colin Farell as the vagabond villain and picks up after the events of the 2022 Batman film directed by Matt Reeves.

I guess you’re wondering what’s up with Penguin’s new name. Well, in the new series, Oswald Cobblepot was changed to Oz Cobblepot; in fact, it was shortened to Oz Cobb.

And this jovial name sounds ridiculously forced, according to many.

“The Penguin’s name is changed from Oswald Cobblepot to Oz Cobb in The Batman universe to make the character more grounded,” shared Redditor MWheel5643.

“This is basically the Streisand Effect. Everyone is so used to Oswald Cobblepot as his name that changing it to freaking “Oz Cobb” has the opposite effect and makes it feel less grounded,” – answered GhostMug.

“Ah so, Oswald Cobblepot isn’t grounded, but the Penguin name is fine,” SPBF3D said sarcastically, to which lalololoslas simply said “that’s stupid”.

Adding to the conversation, IamtheShadows00 clarified the abbreviated name change. “I just want to point this out for clarity’s sake: I think Oz Cobb is just somewhat of a nickname.”

They continued: “I believe his birth name is Oswald Cobb. The reason I say this is because in the trailer released a month ago, Oz’s mother calls him “Oswald.” They may have edited this out for the show, but this is what I wanted to share.”

In the end, the name Oz Cobb sounds really weird, but it’s not the end of the world. I doubt Batman or Police Chief Gordon will use that nickname. I’m sure it will be reserved for the criminal scum of Gotham City.
