The new installment in the legendary franchise is being made by the studio formerly responsible for the WWE wrestling games, and as the publisher is Arc System Works (ArcSys), which has a rather unique flavor in the fighting game genre, we won’t be disappointed.
Double Dragon Revive will be brought to the Tokyo Game Show, so if you happen to be in Chiba at the Makuhari Messe between September 26 and 29, you can give the game a try. The new images show Billy Lee and Jimmy Lee, two of the iconic protagonists of the Double Dragon franchise, as well as many of the opponents. They are Roper, Williams, Joji, Anh and Minh. Moves include basic attack, grapple, special moves, mid-air special moves, super special moves and critical attack…
Double Dragon debuted in arcades in 1987, so the franchise has been running for nearly four decades and has gone through several developers. The latest installment (which looks like a cross between King Of Fighters and Street Fighter 6) is being developed by Yuke’s. It will be a 3D episode that will pit some old villains against the Lee brothers, but as we’ve come to expect, expect side-scrolling fights in the gameplay. We’ll get the same simple and intuitive gameplay as before, but the controls and difficulty have been updated for the modern era. The experience will be overseen by ArcSys, and given their experience with fighting games (they’re behind the Guilty Gear IP, for example), that’s not a bad idea, and new players should be able to get up to speed quickly. It’s good because there will be multiple difficulty levels (they won’t have just one), so we can make things a little easier.
You have to adapt and vary during fights, so you can’t just play through it with one move (so just pressing a button won’t get you a good result). You need to learn your opponent’s attack patterns to find the most effective timing. Weapons will be scattered around the maps for you to pick up, but there will also be different environmental elements in the regions that you can use.
Double Dragon Revive will be available next year for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC (Steam), PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
