At Electronic Arts’ investor day, we found out how many studios publisher CEO Andrew Wilson has lined up to revive the Call of Duty rival franchise after Battlefield 2042 failed to live up to expectations…
Laura Miele, president of entertainment and technology at Electronic Arts, said that no franchise portrays all-out combat, massive destruction on a massive scale, and high-intensity combat like Battlefield. She said that these elements are the reason the franchise is successful, but acknowledged that some games in the franchise’s history have not been strong enough, specifically referring to Battlefield 2042. To create a title that appeals to the audience, the approach to development has also changed significantly. Electronic Arts has been working with the community for the past year, trying to create the best experience based on ideas and feedback.
According to Byron Beede, all four studios working on the new episode have a role to play in building the world of Battlefield. DICE will focus on the multiplayer elements, while Criterion Games will focus on both single-player and multiplayer content. Motive will be building a story mode based on their storytelling and action game skills, while Ripple Effect will be creating a new Battlefield experience based on the franchise’s unique DNA, which has been very well received by players based on internal testing.
The Battlefield Central Tech Team is driving the development of the new episode, and they’re focused on making sure developers have the technology and tools they need to maximize their capabilities. According to Beede, they’re doing this with the full support of Electronic Arts and have assembled the largest, strongest and most focused team in Battlefield. The developers have been playing the game every day for more than a year, with a strong focus on software stability. Later, they will test it with players on a larger scale to fine-tune it with feedback on gameplay, performance, and fun factor.
We’ll see what comes of it…
