MOVIE NEWS – Director Zack Snyder has shared new details about the 300 prequel series, discussing where the project currently stands. Released in 2007, 300 followed Snyder’s successful 2004 film, Dawn of the Dead. The movie stars Gerard Butler as King Leonidas and covers the historic Battle of Thermopylae, where 300 Spartan warriors faced Xerxes’ (Rodrigo Santoro) vast army. After the sequel 300: Rise of an Empire in 2014, it was reported earlier this year that the universe of the first movie would return in a prequel TV series, helmed by Snyder.
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Snyder confirmed he is actively involved in developing the 300 prequel series. However, it appears that the project is still in its very early stages, as Snyder revealed they are in the “initial discussions” stage, where they’re brainstorming story ideas. Below is Snyder’s comment where he compares the prequel series to his new anime project Twilight of the Gods (2024):
“We’re just about to start diving in and getting down to business. It’s a lot of fun, I really love this world. Even in our early conversations where we’re like, ‘What if this or that happened,’ it’s all just so much fun to think about. The world is incredibly rich. In a strange way, it’s similar to [Twilight of the Gods] in terms of some underlying themes.”
Snyder’s update essentially confirms that the show remains in the conceptual stage, with the director and his team still exploring the story they want to tell. This also means that the 300 series has not yet been officially greenlit. The original Variety report that announced the prequel’s development revealed that it was being produced by Warner Bros. Television, and Snyder’s update confirms that WB has yet to fully commit to bringing the series to fruition.
As for when we might expect to see the 300 prequel, if it gets the go-ahead, 2027 or later is a reasonable estimate. Snyder teased another project earlier this summer, describing it as a “small movie” with minimal VFX, but updates on that have been scarce, and it may not gain momentum until 2025. It’s also unclear if Snyder will be dedicating time to expanding his Rebel Moon universe on Netflix after both films received mixed to negative reception.
Snyder is a polarizing filmmaker, with both highs and lows in his career, but 300 is generally considered one of his stronger works. As a standalone story, it’s not clear how much a prequel could add or enhance the original. The reception to Noam Murro’s 300: Rise of an Empire was mostly negative, which might have dampened enthusiasm for more stories in that universe.
After the critical and audience reception to Rebel Moon was lukewarm at best, and with the rumored cancellation of his Army of the Dead sequel, Snyder may be in need of a successful project. His upcoming “small movie” could potentially fill that role, but if it doesn’t, all eyes will be on the 300 prequel series.
