TECH NEWS – Elon Musk aims to restore vision to blind individuals, and his futuristic device has just received medical approval. Neuralink once again surprises with a technology designed to enhance human visual capabilities.
One of Elon Musk’s most ambitious ventures is Neuralink, the brain chip initiative focused on helping patients regain mobility. It has already made headlines with stories of gamers playing Civilization for hours on end or Counter Strike fans who can now game using only their minds. Now, according to reports, Neuralink is preparing for its next major leap.
According to a recent post from TechSpot, Neuralink has received FDA approval to begin testing “Blindsight,” a device aimed at restoring vision to blind individuals. The goal of Neuralink is to create an interface that could help patients suffering from severe medical conditions such as blindness. Elon Musk has previously stated that Blindsight would enable people who have lost their eyes or optic nerves to see again, provided their visual cortex is intact.
A Breakthrough for Those Blind Since Birth
Additionally, Blindsight has the potential to grant vision to individuals blind from birth, though initial visual quality may be low resolution. In fact, Neuralink’s technology could even surpass normal human vision, with possibilities like seeing in infrared or ultraviolet. Musk has compared this tech to the visor worn by Star Trek‘s Geordi La Forge, which converts the electromagnetic spectrum into visual signals for the brain.
The FDA has categorized Blindsight as a “breakthrough device,” a label reserved for medical options with the potential to offer significant advantages over existing treatments. If all goes as planned, the device could be available sooner than expected. Neuralink is also continuing its work with quadriplegic patients to conduct new clinical trials with its brain implants.
