Microsoft’s strategy may be followed by Sony’s next-generation console, but it could complicate the marketing and strategy of the “blue” team…
On the NeoGAF forum, a well-known AMD leaker, Kepler, talked about the fact that Sony is reportedly working on two SoCs (system-on-a-chip) for the PlayStation 6. He couldn’t confirm whether it will be a copy of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, or whether it could be a more complicated situation, with the larger, more powerful SoC designed for a desktop console and the weaker model for a handheld (if the latter is true, let’s hope it’s not a product like the PlayStation Portal…).
What Kepler could tell us, however, is that the weaker chip will be cheaper and more affordable, so there’s a clear performance difference between the two versions. For this reason, it really makes sense that Sony could be planning a PlayStation 6 Pro alongside the PlayStation 6, and either both consoles will hit the shelves at the same time, or the company is just trying to plan ahead, which doesn’t seem practical given the rate of technological advancement over the next few years.
We don’t know much about the PlayStation 6 yet, but a few days ago we heard from Reuters that Intel didn’t win, so AMD will once again help create the console’s hardware. Negotiations with Intel broke down because the two parties could not agree on the profit margin, so they could not set a price for the console, and there were concerns about back attacks, but Sony and Intel have been negotiating this for a long time.
Meanwhile, we’re still waiting for the PlayStation 5 Pro, which will be available from November 7th for $700/€800, but it doesn’t include the vertical stand (that’s funny…) or the Blu-ray drive, which sold out almost immediately after the console was announced, for example on Amazon…
