After Concord flopped pretty badly (even if it didn’t have the budget we first heard about), Sony could use a genre from the past.
The seventh generation of consoles was a huge period of experimentation for PlayStation, after Sony (rather embarrassingly) unveiled the PlayStation 3, and had to win back the favor of customers from a disadvantaged position, as both Microsoft and Nintendo had gotten off to a strong start: the X360 had a year’s head start, and the Wii was a huge hit with casual gamers. Because of this, Sony decided that internally developed first-party titles needed to be as diverse as possible to appeal to both casual and hardcore audiences, and so many different genres of franchises were born, from puzzle platformers to survival games to action RPGs…
Killzone, which debuted on the PS2, and Resistance, which launched on the PS3, were the dominant franchises of the era. Both were sci-fi FPSs that managed to break into an already crowded genre, but since the PlayStation 4, Sony hasn’t used either for over a decade. Resistance was created by Insomniac Games. The franchise has produced five games, two of which have appeared on Sony handhelds. Resistance: Fall of Man, the first installment in the franchise, was one of the PlayStation 3’s launch titles (and it shined in sales), but the other two episodes are still only available on PS3.
And Killzone debuted on PS2 in the fall of 2004, but on PlayStation 3 with the second and third installments, and then 2013’s PlayStation 4 opener Killzone: Shadow Fall wasn’t as successful, and was Sony’s last first-person shooter not set in VR… until Concord.
So a return to the genre has gone badly for Sony, and that’s exactly why they need a good quality FPS, because Microsoft has Call of Duty. But that would require them not to neglect their old IPs!
