Just like last year’s Gaiden episode, the Like a Dragon franchise is getting another one next year, although we first heard about this game back in May!
The Japanese title of the game translates into English as Like A Dragon 8 Side Story: Pirates in Hawaii. This is something that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio might focus on later, as Jawmuncher talked about it on Twitter before the game was officially unveiled. SEGA was reportedly considering whether or not to include the word Gaiden in the western title. This could be a smaller game that would appear between the main episodes, allowing for better character development.
Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name and Like A Dragon (8): Infinite Wealth were tied together, and in the former, Kiryu was fleshed out before being given a more prominent role in the main episode. Now, Goro Majima may be given an equally important position in the pirate game before being given a central role in Like A Dragon 9.
SEGA writer, producer and director Masayoshi Yokoyama, who has been working on the IP since the beginning of the franchise, told Famitsu that it will have a storyline 1.3-1.5 times longer than the previous Like A Dragon Gaiden. This means that it will take about 15-18 hours to play through, which is about the same amount of time it took to complete the first three Yakuza games and Yakuza 6: The Song of Life. Yokoyama didn’t estimate how long it would take to complete 100%, but based on How Long To Beat, it took about 32 hours to complete Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. So it could be 42-48 hours here.
By the way, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii appeared on 4chan back in May, but no one believed it, the game sounded so wild. But now it’s official, it’s in the works and will be released on February 28th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One…
