TECH NEWS – Announced at Meta Connect 2024, the headset is trying to win the public’s favor with its low price, and you really don’t have to wait much longer.
The Meta Quest 3S uses the same chipset as the “basic trio” (Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2), so there’s not much difference in performance between the two headsets. There is a difference in memory, as the Meta Quest 3 will have 512 GB, while the 3S will only offer 128 or 256 GB. The other difference is the viewing angle (Meta Quest 3: 110°, Meta Quest 3S: 89-96°). The cheaper headset uses a Fresnel lens instead of a pancake lens, so it’s a bit thicker, has a single LCD instead of a dual LCD, and you can’t connect headphones. On the plus side, while the Meta Quest 3 can be used for 2.2 hours, Mark Zuckerberg says the 3S offers 2.5 hours…
The Meta Quest 3S also supports most accessories (e.g. cases and eite straps), but not the charging dock, so there’s a new, smaller version of that with the headset. Meanwhile, Zuck is also slashing the price of the Meta Quest 3: it will be available for $500 instead of the current $650. Meta Quest 2 will be discontinued, as will Meta Quest 3 Pro. Anyone who purchases Meta Quest 3 between now and 5pm Pacific Time on April 30, 2025 will receive a free copy of Batman: Arkham Shadow, which is being developed by Camouflaj and will be released on October 22. You’ll also receive a three-month Meta Quest+ subscription to access additional VR titles.
Other games on display at Meta Connect 2024 included Metro: Awakening (coming to PlayStation VR2, Meta Quest 3 and SteamVR on November 7) and Behemoth (Skydance’s new fantasy action-adventure game from The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners devs due out on December 5).
Meta Quest 3S will be available from October 15th. The 128GB model will be available for $300 and the 256GB model for $400.
