Could Bungie Be Making a Metroidvania?! All We Know About The Next Destiny 2 Expansion

Apollo is the code name for the first batch of Destiny 2 content that will be released in the coming years. It will be one of two expansions planned for 2025, and this format will be repeated in the future.

As promised, this week, Bungie revealed more information about the near future of Destiny 2, including the Revenant episode—which will be available next week as part of this year’s content program—and the first of two expansions, codenamed Apollo, planned for 2025. The latter also marks the beginning of a new future for the shooter MMO and has been described as a “Metroidvania.”

In short, Destiny 2 wrapped up its first major narrative arc this year with the excellent The Final Shape expansion, which was well-received by critics and fans alike but sold somewhat poorly.

In response to this problem, Bungie has “a new multi-year saga” in the works called “Codename Frontiers”.

This means the introduction of new characters and storylines, a thorough redesign of several systems (equipment, difficulty, and more), and a change to the game’s monetization, which simplifies the acquisition of new content in exchange for the release of two medium-sized expansions: the first is Apollo, which will be followed by Behemoth follows.

What will future expansions for Destiny 2 look like?

Bungie compared the situation of the second part to Rise of Iron, the last expansion of the original Destiny released in 2016, to give fans a rough idea of the amount of new content coming to the game. There will be story missions that are less linear than before, as well as more “unique” experiences. In the case of Apollo, as we said, what we get will be mostly in line with the design of a Metroidvania.

In this week’s livestream, narrative director Alison Lührs and assistant director Robbie Stevens hinted that we will have more freedom to explore the environment. We can unlock new abilities and use them to interact with other previously closed areas. This could give the new locations some variety and replayability, similar to previous locations in Forsaken Dream City (2018) or TFS Weak Heart (2024).

Apollo is expected to arrive in mid-2025, and Behemoth in late 2025. In the meantime, TFS will be adding two more episodes, the first of which (Revenant) will arrive in next week’s reboot.
