“We made some shitty games before.” The creators of Silent Hill 2 Remake admit their past failures, but say they’ve evolved their formula and are dedicated to perfecting horror.
One reason why many players were initially skeptical about Bloober Team handling the Silent Hill 2 Remake was the studio’s previous track record. They had developed titles like Layers of Fear (2016), Observer, Blair Witch, and The Medium in 2021. Each game had its pros and cons, but none stood out as exceptional works in the horror genre. However, things have changed for the Polish studio with Konami’s survival horror, which has become their most significant project to date.
In a recent interview with GameSpot, the co-director of Bloober Team acknowledged that their previous games received mixed reviews, but they were crucial in helping the studio grow and improve in the horror genre. “We want to find our niche, and we think we’ve found it. Now we just want to keep evolving. It’s a complex process, but also an organic one,” he said, reflecting on their first horror title.
“Like with 2016’s Layers of Fear, people in the studio were like, ‘Okay, we’ve made some crappy games before, but we can evolve,'” said Bloober Team director and producer Jacek Zieba. He further emphasized that the team is now focused solely on horror, especially survival horror, with upcoming projects like Cronos: The New Dawn. “We want to be a horror company. We’ve assembled a team that loves horror, so it’s going to be tough for us to switch to other genres, and honestly, we don’t want to,” added Wojciech Piejko, director and designer.
Bloober Team Wants to Make More Silent Hill Games
The studio also noted that the success of Silent Hill 2 Remake was no accident. With over a million copies sold in just three days, Bloober Team is eager to continue working on the Silent Hill franchise. The team is open to creating more remakes or even original Silent Hill titles after the remake’s strong performance both in terms of sales and critical reception.
