MOVIE NEWS – Sony’s Spider-Man Universe continues to expand, and Venom star Tom Hardy is eager to shake things up by taking on Marvel’s Spider-Man after Venom: The Last Dance. While this shared universe hasn’t been hugely successful, with the Venom franchise being the sole critical and commercial hit, the final installment in the series could set the stage for future projects.
Venom: The Last Dance, the final film in the trilogy, sees Eddie and Venom on one last adventure as they’re hunted by their respective species. Facing unforeseen challenges, the duo must make a monumental decision that could bring their journey to a close forever.
At New York Comic Con, Tom Hardy took the stage to promote his new film and expressed his strong desire to fight Spider-Man, even though this is his last film in the Venom saga. He stated:
“I would love to fight Spider-Man. I would love to fight him now. I’m happy to fight Spider-Man today, 100 percent. I would never say never. We were specifically set up to bring Venom to a movie format, and that’s what we’ve done. ‘The Last Dance’ is the final piece in that trilogy, and we’re really excited about that.”
In recent years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has made several fan-favorite match-ups and crossovers possible, from Spider-Man vs. Mysterio to Wolverine vs. Sabretooth and even the highly anticipated Deadpool vs. Wolverine. So, Hardy’s desire to face off against the MCU’s Spidey seems more plausible than ever, especially with the number of Spider-Man projects lined up for the future.
How Could Venom and Spider-Man Face Off?
Before Spider-Man: No Way Home, it seemed unlikely that Venom and our friendly neighborhood hero would ever cross paths. However, the film’s post-credit scene gave fans a glimmer of hope. Although Eddie is whisked away after the events of No Way Home, he leaves behind a piece of the symbiote, which could one day face off against Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. While the first trailers for Venom: The Last Dance suggest this connection may be resolved quickly, we’ll have to wait and see how it plays out.
Fans are just as excited as Hardy to see this match-up happen. Furthermore, during the filming of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tom Holland also expressed interest in battling Venom (via ScreenRant), saying, “I think Venom is someone I’d love to kick the crap out of one day.” With enthusiasm from both actors and fans, it feels like a showdown is inevitable.
Marvel Comics has seen these two look-alike heroes clash multiple times, from Superior Spider-Man vs. Agent Venom to their unexpected alliance when Venom takes a humanoid form to fight alongside Spidey. In any case, as Venom: The Last Dance closes out the trilogy, it could open up new opportunities for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe with exciting projects on the horizon.
Directed and co-written by Kelly Marcel, who also penned the scripts for both Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Venom: The Last Dance features Tom Hardy not only in the leading role but also as a co-writer. The film’s cast includes Juno Temple, Stephen Graham, Cristo Fernandez, Peggy Lu, and Alanna Ubach. Venom: The Last Dance is set to hit theaters on October 25, 2024.
