“We’re done with the saga.” Guerrilla Games finally addresses the long-standing rumors and confirms that Killzone was laid to rest a long time ago.
Although the studio made its name with shooters, Guerrilla Games has been fully dedicated to the Horizon series since the first game launched in 2017. From that point on, the Amsterdam-based developers have had eyes only for Aloy and her post-apocalyptic open world. As the years went by, fans grew increasingly concerned that Killzone might be dead—and now, their fears have been confirmed: PlayStation’s studio ended the series quite some time ago.
In a recent interview with The Washington Post during the promotional campaign for LEGO Horizon, art director Roy Postma revealed that the decision to leave Killzone behind was made a while ago to focus solely on the Horizon franchise. While this is disappointing news for fans of the early 2000s shooter, it’s a decision that has been clear for a while.
“We were already done with Killzone as a team,” Postma added, indicating that if PlayStation were ever to bring the series back, it likely wouldn’t be Guerrilla Games behind it. Speaking to the English-language outlet, Postma explained that Guerrilla consciously moved away from the “dark palette and gloomy universe” of Killzone to the vibrant, colorful world of Horizon. “As a studio, we needed a change. It was a deliberate choice to go in the opposite direction of Killzone,” he remarked.
If Killzone Returns, It Won’t Be Guerrilla Bringing It Back
As games-as-a-service continues to grow in popularity, many fans have speculated about the potential revival of classic franchises like Killzone, SOCOM, and Twisted Metal. However, Sony’s focus remains on market-proven titles such as Helldivers 2. Meanwhile, other projects like Haven Studio’s Fairgame$ and Bungie’s Marathon are also in the works.
With the release of LEGO Horizon on the horizon and the possibility of a multiplayer collaboration with NCSoft, Guerrilla Games has long since moved on from Killzone. The series, which first launched in 2004, saw five installments across four consoles, with Killzone: Shadow Fall serving as a PlayStation 4 launch title in 2013. Despite the franchise’s loyal fanbase, Sony has shown no interest in reviving Killzone, instead opting to focus on new projects.
