Could the “Rey” Star Wars Movie Be in Trouble?! Daisy Ridley Comments on the Latest Developments

MOVIE NEWS – Daisy Ridley speaks out after disappointing news about Rey’s Star Wars sequel…

Daisy Ridley has assured fans not to worry about her upcoming Star Wars film after news broke that the screenwriter was leaving. Lucasfilm has several different Star Wars films in development, one of which will follow Ridley’s character Rey 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. The as-yet-untitled film will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, with the script originally written by Steven Knight. But he recently dropped out of the film, making some fans worry that it would be another of the many announced SW films that never materialized.

On the latest episode of The Playlist’s Discourse Podcast, while promoting her latest film, Magpie, Ridley gave a little insight into the creative process behind the film. She has already denied a claim that the news of Knight’s exit means that Rey’s Star Wars film won’t meet its rumoured December 2026 release date, saying, “We don’t have a date.” That’s true, as neither Disney nor Lucasfilm have set an official release date for the film. As for losing their writer, Ridley pointed out that it’s just part of the filmmaking process, as multiple writers come and go on projects. She said, “I think the creative process is one that is really a journey.”

However, Knight isn’t the first writer to work on a Rey-led Star Wars film and then abruptly leave.

Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were originally attached to write the film before they left in March 2023. It wasn’t known at the time that the film would focus on Rey and take place after The Rise of Skywalker. But Lindelof and Britt-Gibson’s work was rumored to be set much later in the Star Wars timeline, and that Helen Mirren was wanted to play Rey. This news was never officially confirmed by the writers or Lucasfilm. Lindelof noted that he was asked to leave the project. Knight reportedly submitted four drafts before also leaving the Rey film.

Is the Daisy Ridley Rey movie still on track?!

Disney and Lucasfilm currently have two untitled release dates for Star Wars movies: December 18, 2026, and December 17, 2027. The Rey movie is believed to be in 2026, as it is further along in development than James Mangold’s Jedi Origins movie or Dave Filoni’s crossover movie. Still, the idea that the Rey movie would hit theatres on December 18 was just speculation. If it were to be delayed, it would give them time to hire a new writer, rework the script, and start production. Even if it does hit theatres in 2027, Lucasfilm would be better off not rushing a Star Wars movie than rushing to meet its release date. After all, that was one of the factors, among many others, that led to the failure of The Rise of Skywalker.

Ridley has previously hinted that the Rey-led Star Wars movie could be the start of something new, perhaps a trilogy. It’s an interesting question to ask whether the film will be Star Wars Episode X, continuing the Skywalker saga; or whether Lucasfilm will stick to its own position and leave The Rise of Skywalker as the conclusion of the saga. Instead, the Rey movie would be the starting point for a whole new era of SW movies, TV shows, video games, and novels…
