The Substance Actress Continues to Terrify Audiences in a “Victorian Horror Movie”?!

MOVIE NEWS – The Substance star and Longlegs producer team up for a ‘psychopathic’ Victorian horror film…

Some of the key players from two of the year’s biggest films are joining forces for their next project: The Substance star Margaret Qualley and Longlegs producer Dan Kagan are teaming up for the gothic horror film “Victorian Psycho.” Qualley is coming off the success of Coralie Fargeat’s body horror masterpiece, which became Mubi’s biggest theatrical release to date. In contrast, Kagan’s Longlegs became the highest-grossing original horror film of the year.

Victorian Psycho will be directed by Zachary Wigon, from a screenplay by bestselling author Virginia Feito, whose upcoming novel the project is based on. This will be the second collaboration for Wigon and Qualley, having previously worked together on the director’s 2022 psychological thriller Sanctuary. The film is set in 1858 and will follow Qualley’s character as she adjusts to her new role as governess in a Gothic castle while trying to control her “psychopathic tendencies.” You can read the full synopsis below.

“In 1858, a young, eccentric governess named Winifred Notty (Qualley) arrives at the remote gothic manor known as Ensor House. Winifred’s responsibilities include teaching the children table manners and educating them about their family’s history, all whilst hiding her psychopathic tendencies. As Winifred assimilates into life at Ensor House, staff members begin to inexplicably disappear, and the owners of the estate begin to wonder if there is something amiss about their new governess…”

Margaret Qualley’s career skyrockets after The Substance

Starting in 2013, Qualley has been in the business for just over a decade, but in that short time, she has managed to amass an impressive number of roles. She first gained attention for her role in HBO’s The Leftovers, which led to her breakthrough role in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Qualley, who took on the role of “Pussycat,” earned a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination in 2020 and has since appeared in films such as Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness, as well as Drive-Away Dolls.

“Working with Zach again feels like a rare gift, and I can’t wait to step into this twisted world he’s created,” she said of reuniting with Wigon on Victorian Psycho. Kagan echoed her comments about the “twisted world” film, saying the script was definitely unique: “From its first few pages to its terrifying ending, Victorian Psycho entirely delivered on its promise of being a ride like nothing I’d read before. I couldn’t be more excited to be bringing this movie to life.”

As for Wigon, he expressed his excitement about working with Qualley again on Victorian Psycho, calling his character a “complex antihero.”

There’s no word yet on when Victorian Psycho will go into production, and no release date has been set. In the meantime, you can see Qualley in The Substance, and next year in several films, including The Huntington, Blue Moon, and Happy Gilmore 2.
