MOVIE NEWS – Robert Eggers returns to the horror genre he has already mastered with The Witch, offering a new vision of Nosferatu. Critics have already seen the film and taken to social media to share their reactions, suggesting Eggers may have exceeded expectations.
Courtney Howard praises Nosferatu, calling it the hardest-hitting horror film of the year and labeling Bill Skarsgård’s performance as “nightmare fuel.”
“Robert Eggers’ #Nosferatu goes HARDER than any other horror film this year. Holy hell. A gorgeous grotesquerie filled with dread and dark delight. Bill Skarsgård’s Count Orlok is pure sinister nightmare fuel. Lily-Rose Depp and Nicholas Hoult give their best performances yet.”
Gregory Ellwood from The Playlist suggests that Lily-Rose Depp deserves Oscar consideration, as does the ensemble cast.
“Nosferatu showcases Robert Eggers’ visionary style. Lily-Rose Depp is superb. Willem Dafoe looks like he’s having a blast. Could it crack Best Picture? Maybe. Depp stands a chance in the packed Supporting Actress race.”
Jazz Tangcay from Variety calls Nosferatu a “perfect remake” and highlights Depp’s captivating performance.
“Arise #Nosferatu. Devilishly bloody and grotesque. Impeccably crafted, with haunting sound design and a gripping score. Lily-Rose Depp’s performance is thoroughly captivating. Robert Eggers has crafted a flawless remake.”
Germain Lussier of Gizmodo believes Eggers has made stronger films but calls Nosferatu a “horror knockout.”
“Robert Eggers’ #Nosferatu is a knockout. Bloody, creepy, intense, with a touch of dark humor. Lily-Rose Depp shines as the lead, and Skarsgård’s vampire is wholly unique and grounded. Not my favorite Eggers film, but excellent nonetheless.”
Joey Magidson finds Eggers a “perfect match” for the remake, though warns that the film’s pacing may “test” some viewers.
“Nosferatu is pure Robert Eggers. He’s an ideal fit for this material, which he lets breathe in ways that may challenge impatient viewers, but reward those who connect with his style. It’s disturbing, strange, but hauntingly timeless.”
Matt Neglia from Next Best Picture calls Nosferatu one of the “most seductively macabre films ever made,” praising Depp and Skarsgård.
“Bill Skarsgård’s dark, seductive performance, grotesque makeup, atmospheric sound design, Jarin Blaschke’s cinematography, and Robin Carolan’s haunting score come together to reimagine a gothic classic, culminating in a final shot that left chills. I’m ready to revisit the darkness.”
