MOVIE NEWS – Kiefer Sutherland fights for survival in the scenes of his new action thriller Sierra Madre…
Kiefer Sutherland returns to the action genre with his new film, Sierra Madre. Fans will now be able to see the 24-star for the first time in what is sure to be his latest blockbuster. In the thriller set in Mexico, Sutherland plays a military officer who, when he leaves, finds himself embroiled in a deadly battle with a local cartel. For Sutherland, these kinds of gritty action roles have been the backbone of his career for more than two decades, and the Justin Chadwick-directed film is likely to deliver what fans have come to expect. The synopsis of the film reads:
“When Captain Jordan Wright (Sutherland) and his squadron are granted leave from their mission to attend a crewmate’s wedding in Mexico, festivities are interrupted by a cartel’s murderous descent on the small village. As Jordan attempts to lead his remaining men to safety, war breaks out between his squad and the cartel. Now under siege in the enemy’s deadly stronghold, Jordan has no other option but to engage in a full-scale battle to save the only family he has.”
Sutherland announced back in March that he was joining the film, and now we finally get to see him in his new role for the first time.
At the time of the announcement, he said:
“I’m thrilled to be joining the team on Sierra Madre, led by director Justin Chadwick. I feel it is a compelling thriller with great emotional and dramatic opportunities. Or more simply put, a damn good story.”
Kiefer Sutherland is not new to the action-hero role
When Kiefer Sutherland’s name is mentioned, people used to be immediately associated with films like The Lost Boys or Stand By Me. Nowadays, however, it is much more likely that the first name that comes to mind is Jack Bauer – the main character of the popular “real-time” series 24. Since taking on the role of Bauer in 2001, Sutherland has become known for action-packed films such as Phone Booth, where he plays a sniper who manipulates a man in a phone booth, and The Sentinel, where he plays a Secret Service agent who faces conspiracy against the president.
Following his award-winning series 24, Sutherland scored another TV hit with the political thriller series Designated Survivor, in which he played a cabinet member forced into the presidency following a terrorist attack. The series ran from 2016 to 2019. We last saw him in Rabbit Hole, in his world-saving mode.
Sierra Madre is currently shooting in Colombia and alongside Sutherland also stars Detective Pikachu star Omar Chaparro, Laura Osma, Ashton Sanders of The Equalizer 2, Tommy Martinez, Laird Akeo and Orlando Pineda, who most recently starred in the Netflix hit Griselda. The film has no release date yet but is expected to debut in 2025.
