According to the Xbox boss, the Fallout series has also done well by not releasing a new game (which is why they did away with the Fallout: London mod back in the day…?).
Phil Spencer spoke with Bloomberg about his satisfaction with the results of the first round of Xbox titles on PlayStation 5 and/or Nintendo Switch. There’s more to come, and he says there’s no red line on what NOT to port to Sony or Nintendo hardware, but he says it’s too early to say for the new Halo. So he’s not ruling anything out, but there’s probably no chance of it being released on Xbox and PlayStation on the same day.
The handheld market has skyrocketed in recent years, and Spencer says there’s an expectation that Microsoft will try something. They’re currently working on a prototype and considering what to do, but Spencer has already issued a challenge to his team: see what happens in the market and develop the Xbox handheld based on what they learn. No word yet on whether it will run games locally, so a release is years away. Spencer also talked about wanting to continue acquisitions, so after Activision Blizzard, another publisher could end up under them (like Ubisoft?).
Spencer and Jonathan Nolan, creator of the Fallout TV series, participated in a roundtable discussion at the Paley International Council Summit on Source Code: How Hollywood and Videogames Are Leveling Up Together. Here, Spencer said that it was good for the series not to have a game released alongside it. He said that the strategy is deeper and longer term: “We didn’t have a new game ready for launch. I think that actually gave us some creative freedom that we wouldn’t have had if we were trying to coordinate the production of two very different creative processes to land at the same time. The game is much more long term than trying to drive some gift purchase,” Spencer said.
It’s rare these days to see a game adaptation of a movie or show.Interest in games, however, was sparked when Fallout appeared on Amazon Prime Video.Nolan added what to expect in the second season: “For the most part, in games, it’s a little harder grammatically to do flashbacks, right? Some games do it very well. There are some memorable flashbacks in Call of Duty and other franchises. But for the most part, you kind of lock the user into this first-person point of view across space and time. In a show, you can flash back and explore that world beforehand. That’s one of the things I love most about the first season, and we’ll be doing more of that in the second season.”
Fallout Season 2 will begin filming soon in California.
