One of the titles supporting the PlayStation 5 Pro might make developers wonder if 8K resolution is really worth considering…
It’s not that common yet, as 4K displays aren’t even that common yet, so 8K resolution (7680 x 4320, which is four times the pixel count of 4K) has already been achieved on the PlayStation 5 Pro, as demonstrated by No Man’s Sky. The editors at Digital Foundry have also reviewed the PlayStation 5 Pro patch for Hello Games’ constantly updated game (all updates are free!), and they too have praised what Sean Murray and his team have achieved with Sony’s half-generation console update.
Using the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaler, the game scales up from around 2700p native resolution to 8K, and even in motion, the image quality remains stunning. This also confirms that the higher the native resolution, the better the upscaling results. In-game menus are not included. What’s more, the frame rate at 8K is a stable 30 fps, so it’s absolutely playable even at this resolution, and No Man’s Sky’s high-contrast and stylish visual style, with its long vistas, is perfectly suited to 8K, making it the first serious harbinger of this.
Still, it’s no coincidence that we wrote a few days ago that Sony’s 45% performance boost isn’t universal. In fact, in addition to No Man’s Sky, God of War: Ragnarök and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth run well on the PlayStation 5 Pro, but not all titles will run well without a patch designed for the console. If a game doesn’t get PlayStation 5 Pro mode, don’t expect 45%, but a fraction of that is realistic…
Later today, we will also talk about PlayStation’s Black Friday promotions. Maybe you can get one of Sony’s devices relatively cheap…
