Square Enix has ambitious plans to allow players to freely explore the world of Final Fantasy VII with the Highwind airship. Director Naoki Hamaguchi shared exciting details about the next installment at the G-STAR 2024 event.
The Final Fantasy VII Remake series has enchanted fans since its first release, reviving the nostalgia of the original classic with a modern and ambitious vision. With two out of the three planned parts already released, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is shaping up to be a strong contender for GOTY 2024. However, Square Enix remains committed to evolving and redefining one of the most beloved stories in gaming history.
Although Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 is still years away, expectations are sky-high, especially following the success of Rebirth. Recent updates brought good news for fans of the series: the story has been fully written, enabling developers to start production on another ambitious installment, projected for release in 2027 or 2028. But one intriguing detail has gone unnoticed.
Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, revealed at the G-STAR 2024 event in Japan that Square Enix’s challenge for the Part 3 Remake is to let players fly freely across the entire map with the Highwind airship. “We won’t cut corners with the airship system in FFVII Remake Part 3; instead, we’re taking on the challenge head-on, allowing players to fly freely throughout the game’s world,” the director stated (via Siliconera).
For those unfamiliar, the Highwind airship was a pivotal element in the original Final Fantasy VII, granting players world access and exploration freedom. In the remake, it would symbolize even greater openness and ambition, suggesting that Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 will feature a larger, more expansive world.
Beyond its gameplay implications, the Highwind holds narrative significance by deepening relationships among the JRPG’s characters. It’s likely that with the Highwind, players will explore the world on a massive scale without restrictions. Additionally, Square Enix has reassured fans that Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 will uphold the spirit of the original JRPG, delivering greater freedom without betraying its legacy.
