Thanks to the 1.06 update, Bloober Team’s remake doesn’t suffer as much from the half-generation console update, making better use of the more powerful hardware of the PlayStation 5 Pro.
That’s not to say that the visuals are already great on the more powerful PlayStation 5 model, so there’s still room for improvement, but what can be said is that the latest 1.06 update has improved the state of Silent Hill 2 Remake. Digital Foundry editors talk about it in the video below. The previous patch brought support for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling, and now the Polish studio has improved its status.
With update 1006, the Bloober team switched back to TSR in performance mode, with positive results. Lighting and reflections are less noisy and more stable. There is also no noticeable jitter when moving the camera, although we had noticed it before. Image quality remains the same on the PlayStation 5 Pro and the base model. And the slightly better performance is probably only due to the fact that TSR is used instead of PSSR, so there’s no other significant improvement.
The latest update for Silent Hill 2 Remake on PlayStation 5 Pro also makes Performance mode look better than Quality mode (although the opposite is usually true), as the latter still uses PSSR, which doesn’t seem to suit the game’s visuals. Performance is a little more stable on the base PlayStation 5, but there’s still a bit of a gap in terms of image quality, so the Polish developers have some work to do before the studio’s game reaches the level it should on the PlayStation 5 Pro.
So there are some improvements, but not many. The Bloober team isn’t alone: we recently wrote that Remedy Entertainment needs a little more time to get Alan Wake II properly supported on PlayStation 5 Pro…
