The list of games that support the PlayStation 5 Pro continues to grow, but the second of the two titles we’re about to talk about still hasn’t received a patch…
The Callisto Protocol, a game from Striking Distance Studios, has seen significant improvements in image quality and performance, and the PlayStation 5 Pro offers an 8K resolution mode that doesn’t compromise on image quality, according to the editors of Digital Foundry in their weekly podcast. Performance mode has been given the ray-tracing visuals previously only available in Quality mode, while maintaining a stable 60 frames per second. The resolution has been lowered to 1440p and 1296p, where it’s higher on the base PlayStation 5, but the image quality is much sharper.
The game uses TAAU instead of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) and AMD FSR 2 because there are no artifacts on the screen. The studio may have achieved this by exploiting the raw power of the GPU, or they may have had access to the latest Software Development Kit (SDK), which also includes PlayStation 5 Pro-exclusive features. As for the 8K mode, it’s said that it’s not as impressive as what No Man’s Sky achieved, but the image quality is slightly sharper than 4K. Digital Foundry says that the mode uses a dynamic resolution that reaches 6K and scales up to 8K from there.
Remedy Entertainment will also support the console with Alan Wake II, but that will take some time. In the meantime, the Finns have released Update 1.2.5, which includes the base game and two DLCs (Night Springs, The Lake House). The reason why there is no PlayStation 5 Pro specific update is because they are researching it. It also took them several months to support the console, so they need more than a few more weeks to make changes and improvements. In the meantime, there is ray tracing in the game, but PSSR doesn’t work as well. (We’ve already written about the low native resolution being the problem.)
Hopefully there will be no problems with console support.
