MOVIE NEWS – It is now official: Wicked has become the most successful movie musical of all time. In just over a week, it has surpassed $600 million in global box office revenue. Given this success, it’s no surprise that some fans are taking things a bit too far.
Social media is flooded with posts featuring mobile-recorded scenes or entire clips from the film. Many of these posters are encouraging others to share their own recordings. On X/Twitter, for example, as reported by the British Independent, one user uploaded the Wicked opening title recorded in a theater, and it quickly amassed 18.4 million views along with 2,100 comments. However, not all feedback was positive. Many pointed out that such actions are illegal as they violate copyright laws and spoil the experience for those who want to see the movie with “fresh eyes.” Despite this, avid posters remain undeterred, sharing major musical numbers like Defying Gravity and Popular recorded in cinemas. This behavior has infuriated fans who haven’t yet seen the film. The situation has escalated to the point where some U.S. cinema chains are pleading with fans, under the slogan “please don’t do it,” to refrain from spoiling others’ enjoyment with pirated footage.
Wicked tells the previously untold story of the witches of Oz, combining incredible songs with a stunning visual experience. According to critics, the production is nothing short of spectacular. The two leads, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, are already considered strong contenders for the Oscars in most prediction lists.
