The Witcher 4 “Not Out to Beat” the Third Game?! The Developers Speak Out

Philipp Weber, narrative director for The Witcher 4, reminds us that the goal is “to simply create the best game possible!”

We may not see The Witcher 4 for a few more years, but CD Projekt RED is still sharing small tidbits of information about the long-awaited fantasy RPG. The team recently teased many fans by saying that their game, known internally as Project Polaris, will be “better and bigger” than The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 combined. However, one of the development leaders has now been a little more cautious, reminding us that the real goal is “just” to “live up” to Geralt of Rivia’s latest adventure…

Philipp Weber, the new narrative director for The Witcher, has reacted with joy to the news that the RPG has entered full production.

Responding to a user who said that The Witcher 3 is unbeatable (“especially with the DLC installed”), the pro takes a different approach than we’ve seen in official CD Projekt RED announcements so far.

“We’re not out to beat it, since we’re still so proud of what we did then,” Webber, who also worked on The Witcher 3, wrote in a post on X (via GamesRadar+). “Our goal is to at least live up to that legacy, and the only way we can is to stay true to what makes the Witcher what it is, and to simply create the best game possible!”

CD Projekt RED Learned From Cyberpunk 2077 for The Witcher 4

CD Projekt RED doesn’t want to repeat the mistakes of the past. After developing, failing, and perfecting Cyberpunk 2077, the studio has decided to change the way it makes and promotes video games for the next The Witcher. In this spirit, the team assures that “there’s no magic, just hard work,” and that it won’t be long before the RPG is released after the initial announcement. (At least, they hope so…)
