The plan to bring The Lord of the Rings back to theaters is much more ambitious than you thought. So much so that one of its screenwriters is already thinking about another trilogy. Philippa Boyens, writer of the old and new films, has many ideas in mind, and some could end up in a trilogy.
With the release of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, Middle-earth is finally back in theaters. But the animated film is just the first step in Warner Bros.’ big bet on the franchise, which will see a new live-action film, The Hunt of Gollum, in 2026, followed by another film about which nothing has been disclosed yet. Now we know that there are ideas for a possible new trilogy.
In statements collected by The Playlist, Philippa Boyens, the screenwriter of both the original and new feature films, shared the numerous possibilities that Tolkien’s work offers to develop new films, although she admits that it will all depend on the audience’s demand for the franchise:
“There are a lot of possibilities, when you look at it, there are a lot of things there,” Boyens said, leaving the door open to continuing to invest in animated films. But again, she insists, everything will depend on the audience. With The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim arriving this week in several markets, including Spain, we’ll soon get an idea of the audience’s interest.
The anime premieres in the US on December 13, and so far, the most optimistic estimates are for a $24 million launch. Since the production budget has yet to be revealed, we don’t know if this will be enough. Meanwhile, on television, work continues on the third season of The Rings of Power, the prequel series unrelated to the films, being produced by Prime Video.
