According to reports, the Redmond-based tech giant (after Sony snatched the Game of the Year award from them at The Game Awards with Astro Bot) is now considering that there will no longer be an Xbox Game Studios title that will only be available on the Xbox Series…
Multiplatform. It’s a word that many companies have used in their strategy this year. Just think of Sony (true, they’re only planning for PC and mobile…), Square Enix and Microsoft. Especially Microsoft said that their strategy would take into account the platforms of Nintendo and Sony. That’s why Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, Pentiment, and Sea of Thieves are coming to PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, respectively.
Jez Corden, editor of Windows Central, wrote on Twitter that Microsoft doesn’t want to force teams that aren’t ready for simultaneous multiplatform development to switch from an Xbox Series/PC pair development to a multiplatform mindset. He says Hellblade 2, Avowed, and South of Midnight will all make it to PlayStation in time (but will Starfield follow?). So he sees Xbox Game Studios really starting to think about multiplatform development… which is good for gamers, no doubt!
And on the ResetEra forum, another insider, NateDrake, wrote that one of Microsoft’s games that was internally planned for 2025 will not be released next year. So it’s a game that the Redmond-based company has not yet said we can expect at that time. But it doesn’t affect anything that they have planned for next year, so those games are still on track to come out next year.
So there’s a lot of buzz around Microsoft, but for them it’s still a little doubtful whether the multiplatform approach will actually be adhered to by the Redmond-based tech giant. So be it, because it would be good for everyone. Console makers could make more money from other platforms, and gamers wouldn’t have to invest in someone else’s platform.
