Nintendo Switch 2: Is the Dock More Powerful Than We Think?

As rumors swirl about a successor to the Switch, another milestone has been reached with the now-available Switch.

On Reddit, a user named NextHandheld has (had?) access to Nintendo’s new platform. According to them, the dock of the Nintendo Switch 2 (which The Verge even saw a picture of) has a larger rear footprint so that it can be placed horizontally without hindering heat dissipation. No one is likely to use the dock like this, but it ensures that it won’t accidentally tip over, so it certainly won’t overheat.

If there are ventilation holes on the dock, the Switch 2 will probably dock faster. According to the leaker, the dock is 60W, while the Nintendo Switch 2 is 45W (both have higher power consumption compared to its predecessor), and the dock will supposedly only be capable of 30 FPS at 4K resolution. If this is indeed the case, it could be a bit disappointing, because although it’s not in sync with the big N’s hardware with Sony and Microsoft, 4K/60 FPS could be a logical expectation in 2025…

According to Mat Piscatella, director in charge of Circana (formerly NPD Group), the Nintendo Switch could already have more sales than the PlayStation 2 in the United States. According to Sony’s latest official figures, the PS2 has sold 160 million units worldwide. In the US, that’s 53 million, so the Switch is already ahead of that… but another platform is leading the way in the country, with the Nintendo DS hammering out 57 million. But that’s a handheld, while the Switch is a hybrid platform, so it’s in the same category as the PS2. But the Switch is still a long way from the PS2 record, as we heard about three months ago that it was at 146 million with sales slowing down…

With the unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2 not far away, it will be difficult to boost Switch sales enough to break the PS2’s record. The only thing that could help is a fixed price drop, but no one has done that recently (in fact, manufacturers have raised prices).
