One of the Best RPGs of the Year, but No DLC or PC Version in Sight!

It’s one of the year’s best RPGs, but with its studio nearly bankrupt, no PC release or DLC is planned. Unicorn Overlord took Vanillaware to new heights, but the director confirmed that expanding the project isn’t on the agenda.

While Unicorn Overlord didn’t make it to the Game of the Year nominations, it didn’t leave The Game Awards 2024 empty-handed. The Japanese tactical RPG, boasting an impressive Metacritic score of 86/100, was nominated for Best Strategy Game. Although it didn’t win, it has cemented its place among the year’s finest. Its success is underscored by sold-out copies in Japan during its launch week on PS5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch. However, the game’s director has confirmed there won’t be a PC version.

Over the past 15 years, many niche Japanese titles have crossed borders to find success in the West. Games that were once Japan-exclusive have received re-releases to cater to an expanding international fanbase. But for Vanillaware, which went into debt just to bring this RPG to market, expanding to another platform is currently not an option.

A PC Version or DLC Is Too Much for Vanillaware Right Now

In an interview with GamesRadar, the game’s director, Takafumi Noma, detailed the challenges they faced during development. “We ran out of money halfway through development, just like we did with 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim,” he revealed. Atlus’ support, however, was crucial. “We are deeply grateful to Atlus for believing in us and taking a chance on such an unconventional game.” The studio’s small size allowed Vanillaware to keep costs low and focus on quality over quantity.

That’s why simply releasing Unicorn Overlord is an achievement. “We currently have no plans for a DLC, sequel, or PC version,” Noma added. However, he didn’t completely rule it out, stating, “I wouldn’t entirely dismiss the idea.” Ultimately, the company’s future and Atlus’ role as the publisher will influence such decisions.

Vanillaware has proven that extraordinary creations are possible even with limited resources, a lesson that could inspire other developers in an industry dominated by big-budget productions. For players, this strategic RPG has already earned a special place in their hearts, standing as an unforgettable masterpiece.
