TECH NEWS – Even though the Commodore 64 was released more than 42 years ago (it wasn’t until the late 80s and early 90s that it became more popular in our country), you can still see the veteran machine in action.
We often hear that older hardware lasts longer. This is true for many things (including computer components: a rig built ten and a half years ago can still work today), and this story confirms that statement. In Brownsburg, Indiana, USA, a bakery (a doughnut shop), the Hilligross Bakery, is still using the C64.

Two Commodore 64s are used as cash registers. Since this is not a business that sells up to 6-7,000 items a day, it is perfectly understandable that they use the old technology because it can do the job. The pictures on Twitter are not very recent as they were taken in 2010, but in another photo from 2021 you can still see the C64. And even though they are using the old machine, the customers are not bothered, as the shop has an average rating of 4.4 on Yelp and 4.7 on Google Maps, so everyone is mostly very happy with the service of Hilligross Bakery…
The Commodore 64 has become a rarity. Twenty years ago you could get one for pennies with a floppy reader and lots of 5.25″ disks, but nowadays you can’t find one much cheaper than $100 on eBay, but you can find up to $1,250 on the surface. The machine is estimated to have sold between 10 and 17 million units, and when it was first released it was available for $595 (not adjusted for inflation!). The hardware featured a 1 MHz processor and 64 KB of RAM, the latter of which inspired the machine’s name. It remains the best-selling computer of all time.
But if something still works and can do its job, it is not necessary to replace it immediately…
