Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds: Is It Really Made by an “Elite Team”?

While SEGA is reluctant to name the people behind the project, the Japanese publisher has already revealed that it’s not a bunch of developers working on the new Sonic Racing title.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds was announced during The Game Awards. Fans suspect that SEGA is developing in-house this time: it’s likely that SEGA AM2 is working on the game, of which only a short teaser was shown at the last major gaming industry event in 2024. In the video, Shadow the Hedgehog drives his car in a real city, then enters a warp ring and continues the race on the other side of a dimensional portal. There was no gameplay in the video, of course, and we’ll definitely have to wait until 2025 for that.

Several tweets from the official Japanese Sega and Sonic accounts mention that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is being developed by Sega's elite racing game team

A post on Reddit reviewed the official Japanese Twitter accounts of SEGA and Sonic the Hedgehog since the reveal of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, and one of them mentioned that the Japanese publisher’s elite team of racing game developers was behind the project. At first, many guessed SEGA Hardlight (they developed Sonic Dream Team). The current developers, Sumo Digital, don’t seem to be a realistic option anymore (even though they developed Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing, for example), as a tweet from the studio mentions Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but the new game isn’t mentioned…

OutRun, Daytona USA, SEGA Rally and Crazy Taxi were either SEGA AM2 or AM3. Former members of these may have joined forces to become the developers of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. The speculation also touched on the gameplay: there may be more vehicles, which is reminiscent of Mario Kart 8, as you’ll be racing on land, water, air and space. As you switch between them, your vehicle can change depending on the terrain, and even the Extreme Gear seen in the Sonic Riders spin-offs could be present, as it seems to appear in the reflection of Sonic’s sunglasses.

But it’s not official!
