Batman Forever: Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones’ Legendary Feud

MOVIE NEWS – “He got up trembling and told me, ‘I hate you.'” Jim Carrey confirmed that Tommy Lee Jones didn’t like him during the filming of Batman Forever. Joel Schumacher’s film saw its two villains clash off-screen even more than in the movie itself, culminating in an intense confrontation.

Since yesterday, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has been lighting up theaters, with Jim Carrey once again delivering a stellar performance, this time in a double role. However, this isn’t about SEGA’s live-action third installment; instead, it’s about the time Carrey played the villain in Batman Forever and found himself the target of Tommy Lee Jones’ ire.

As strange as it sounds, there’s someone in Hollywood who doesn’t like Jim Carrey—or at least didn’t during the Batman Forever production. This isn’t just a rumor but a real story recounted by Carrey himself. According to the actor, Jones couldn’t stand him during filming. It all came to a head one evening when they coincidentally dined at the same restaurant:

“I went over to say hello, and he turned pale, like he’d been thinking about me for 24 hours. He got up trembling and said, ‘I hate you. I really don’t like you.’ I asked him what the problem was and pulled up a chair to join him—which was probably a mistake. Then he said, ‘I cannot condone your buffoonery.’”

“He didn’t behave as he should have”

Carrey speculated that Jones felt uncomfortable with his role in Batman Forever and may have taken out his frustrations on him. It’s also possible that Carrey’s meteoric rise in the 1990s rubbed Jones the wrong way. While the situation didn’t escalate further, director Joel Schumacher revealed that Jones didn’t live up to his reputation as a professional actor:

“No, he wasn’t nice to Jim. He didn’t act like an Oscar-winning actor with a distinguished career should have, especially as the senior member of the cast. But what happens on set stays on set.”

Despite the tension, there’s no visible sign of conflict between Carrey’s Riddler and Jones’ Two-Face in the movie itself. Batman Forever was a box office hit, grossing over $336 million, thanks to its star-studded cast, including Nicole Kidman and Val Kilmer as Batman.
