PlayStation 5 Pro: Black Myth: Wukong Update Enhances Visuals! [VIDEO]

Chinese Game Science’s Wukong, released over four months ago for PlayStation 5 and PC, has been updated with a new patch to bring even better visuals to Sony’s half-generation console.

A new update of the game (which we wrote about a few days ago, a rather ridiculous copy of which appeared on one of the console manufacturer’s digital storefronts…) has been tested by Digital Foundry, and the results are very positive on PlayStation 5 Pro. In quality mode, Black Myth: Wukong uses the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaler. The native resolution is around 1296p, and PSSR scales up to 4K from there, delivering a noticeably sharper image than the base PlayStation 5. Some visual elements (such as the “noisy” hair in the first boss) are much cleaner with PSSR than with AMD FSR, and the lighting is also more stable with PSSR than in other Unreal Engine 5 titles (such as Silent Hill 2 Remake), but this is more related to the stability of the lighting, which was already noticeable on the base console.

So the PSSR implementation of Black Mythos: Wukong is very good and there are no noticeable problems other than the artifacts seen in other games. Balance mode is similar to Quality mode on the PlayStation 5 Pro, as the internal resolution is 1296p, and from there PSSR scales up to 4K, but there are visual differences (lumen, lower resolution textures). The frame rate here is 40 fps at 120 Hz (30 fps in Quality mode), so the controls are much more responsive and the timing between frames is stable. Performance mode, on the other hand, is unchanged from the base PlayStation 5, as it still uses frame generation to achieve 60 frames per second at 1080p resolution.

This is another great achievement for PSSR, as it doesn’t always perform well (we’ve written about how low native resolution can be problematic).
