PlayStation’s Commitment to Desktop Consoles

While Microsoft is trying to have more than one base in the gaming industry at a time, Sony is trying to stick to the classic home console market…

Cloud gaming is becoming more popular these days, but Sony doesn’t see it as a big deal (aside from the fact that it’s available to subscribers of PlayStation Plus Premium). Sony has been making desktop consoles for three decades, and has been in the handheld market for about a decade and a half (first with the PlayStation Portable/PSP, then with the PlayStation Vita, which only survived for a longer period in Japan), and the PS2 has become the world’s most successful console in terms of overall sales. That made PlayStation a mainstream brand.

And Sony wants to keep it that way, while still being able to offer PlayStation fans the experience on a variety of hardware. Several first-party developments have already made their way to PC (God of War: Ragnarok, Marvel’s Spider-Man, etc.), and PlayStation Portal will soon allow not only remote play, but also cloud play on the device.

Hideaki Nishino, co-CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, told Japanese publication Famitsu that the company’s focus for the foreseeable future will remain on its PlayStation home consoles, citing the growing number of PlayStation 5 games. Nishino also spoke proudly about how many people continue to play PlayStation 4 games. He believes that PlayStation 5 has a long life ahead of it.

Nishino also talked about how Sony is trying to increase the number of PlayStation users. He mentioned PlayStation Portal, but did not mention cloud gaming as the company’s main future. He also spoke briefly about the company’s plans for its next-generation console, emphasizing the need for innovation (as with new consoles), but also the price and release date of the console.

Hopefully everything will work out the way they want it to.
