In an interview 27 years ago, Hideo Kojima told us what he didn’t want in the then PS1 game… but things have changed since then.
Not everyone likes long scenes, but the Japanese genius doesn’t seem to care much about that these days. The fourth installment of Metal Gear Solid (which is understandably still PS3 exclusive, but that will change when Konami announces and releases Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2) set a record that still stands today: it has the longest scene ever. 71 minutes long. That alone could be considered a movie. (And that, if you watch ALL the cutscenes, would be just over NINE HOURS. That would be a trilogy of Lord of the Rings movies…)
Shmupulations has discovered an interview Kojima gave to the Japanese publication Famitsu in 1997. In it, the developer talks about Neta Gear Solid before its release. He wanted to avoid situations where you have to watch and listen to two characters talking for 4-5 minutes. If only he had known what he’d be doing with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots a decade later…
So he was a little reluctant to have scenes in Metal Gear Solid, even though he was already a big movie buff (he was a movie buff). He was worried about the cinematic presentation, and to make the direction more effective, he thought he should have done scenes that were unbridled, because the story of Metal Gear Solid had become very complex and he felt that scenes were necessary. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to beat his 71-minute record in his next project, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, which is scheduled for release on the PlayStation 5 in 2025…
In any case, Kojima was careful with the cutscenes at first. He seems to have gotten used to them and now has a different view.
