Play Grand Theft Auto III on SEGA Dreamcast Today! [VIDEO]

Yes, on SEGA’s newest console: the alpha version of DCA3 has finally appeared, and it’s not easy to get it to work, but when you get through the hard part, the results are excellent.

Grand Theft Auto III is now playable on the SEGA Dreamcast. Of course, this requires compiling the code, and since we’re talking about an alpha version, it’s understandably buggy and can even crash. That’s to be expected with a build like this, but before this version was released, many people tested it for a long time. The button mapping is mostly a natural match for the Dreamcast’s basic controller, and if you want to play through the story this way, you can save your results to a VMU, but it is highly recommended to use an empty VMU…

The reason for compiling the code instead of providing a ready-to-use .CDI or .GDI file is that players are expected to have a copy of the game. It’s a necessary step to keep the port project intact, and any risk of piracy could lead to Rockstar and Take-Two’s legal team knocking on their door (especially since they’re developing Grand Theft Auto VI, which is due out this fall for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series).

If you have Grand Theft Auto III on PC and a SEGA Dreamcast that can run burned CDs, or if you have an optical drive emulator, you should be able to run the port of the game. It took less than a year to make this port, and who knows what would have happened if the Dreamcast hadn’t died in early 2001 (before Grand Theft Auto III was released for the PS2 and sold 11 million copies on that console alone!

This brings to mind a bit of alternate history, i.e. what might have happened if SEGA hadn’t handed over the keys to the Dreamcast when it died a sad death…
