SEGA’s studio is not only working on Like a Dragon (formerly Yakuza), but they are also starting another IP.
We’ve already written about Project Century, and while it’s also set in Japan, the story takes place almost 110 years ago, around 1915, so it’s not exactly a modern setting that we’ll be exploring in the game announced at The Game Awards. Of course, fans have been speculating about what this might be, but the teaser didn’t reveal many details about Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s game. So studio head Yokoyama Masayoshi made some statements that put a lot of fan theories in the figurative trash can.
The most popular theory surrounding Project Century is that it will expand on the origin story of the Omi League. In the latest RGG Studio broadcast, Yokoyama said that all such theories are wrong, and that he believes it would be impossible for fans to accurately gauge what the game announced at the last major event of the year is about if they had to rely only on the materials released so far. Another theory that Yokoyama touched on concerns the actor who plays the main character in Project Century.
According to fans, he looks a lot like Kitamura Kazuki, who played Kiryu Kazuma, the previous protagonist of the franchise, in the 2007 movie adaptation of Like a Dragon (then Yakuza). As a result, it was suggested that Kitamura could be the face of the Project Century protagonist, or even the entire character. Yokoyama denied this, saying that the character was original and created for Project Century, and that Project Century remains shrouded in mystery and may not be directly related to Like A Dragon in any way, except perhaps in its gameplay mechanics. It is set in the Taisho era, our protagonist wears a Happi coat, and the setting is in the Kansai region of Japan, which could be Kobe.
According to Yokoyama, we won’t be hearing from Project Century anytime soon, so this could be a next-gen title.
