State of Decay 3: Why Is the Zombie Survival Game Delayed? [VIDEO]

Microsoft has reportedly made some changes to its plans for the game’s release behind the scenes, and it doesn’t bode well for the third episode of State of Decay.

This game has been announced by Microsoft for over four years now. In fact, Undead Labs’ game was first officially announced at the 2020 Xbox Games Showcase. After the release of the last content update for State of Decay 2, the studio said that if they wanted to create the biggest zombie survival simulator in the franchise to date, they needed to focus on the new installment, but despite the announcement being so long ago, there’s still no word on when the game will be coming to Xbox Series and PC… and now, with a new rumor, it’s not looking good.

Microsoft is rumored to be releasing State of Decay 3 in 2026, although the Redmond-based company previously said it would be 2025. Jez Corden, editor of Windows Central, talked about this on the Xbox Two podcast. He says that although the game is close to completion, Microsoft is more likely to delay its release.

The Coalition (developers of Gears/Gears of War) and Obsidian Entertainment, known for its RPGs, are also involved in the development of State of Decay 3. According to Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb, Xbox’s director of corporate communications, the former team helped Undead Labs with its experience in Unreal Engine 5 and the latter with its shared world feature. The team is also getting help from Blind Squirrel Entertainment (Delta Force Hawk Ops, New World) and Wushu Studios (Fall Guys, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle).

So the state of State of Decay 3 might not be bad, but there are some big hits for 2025 (Avowed, DOOM: The Dark Ages, The Outer Worlds 2, South of Midnight… Fable reboot). In any case, whatever happens, it’s still just a rumor at this point.
