Kojima envisioned a groundbreaking platformer for the MSX, combining the Titanic’s tragic tale with innovative gameplay, but Konami ultimately canceled the project.
The legendary Hideo Kojima, best known for creating Metal Gear and Death Stranding, initially worked on a lesser-known but incredibly bold project. This was Lost Warld, a title that never saw the light of day due to Konami’s technical and strategic decisions.
The Concept of Lost Warld: Unique Story and Technical Challenges
Research by the DidYouKnowGaming YouTube channel uncovered that one of Kojima’s early career projects was the ambitious Lost Warld. The name was a clever play on the words “war” and “world.” However, the project proved to be too ambitious for the MSX’s technological capabilities.
Lost Warld promised an exciting platforming adventure where players would control a woman named Jamie. Jamie was set to spend her honeymoon aboard the Titanic with her husband, Frederic. Tragedy struck when the Titanic collided with a mysterious floating continent, and Frederic was kidnapped by a villain known as Mr. Cloud Man. Jamie’s mission was to survive the disaster and rescue her husband.
Kojima’s Passion and the Project’s Cancellation
Kojima was deeply passionate about the project, as he revealed in an old interview. He spent countless hours working on the details, often losing sleep as he became engrossed in the game. He admitted that developing Lost Warld was a more creatively rewarding experience than some of his later commercially successful titles.
Despite Kojima’s enthusiasm, Konami deemed the project too risky. The limitations of the MSX hardware and the game’s ambitious scope led to its cancellation. Instead, Kojima was assigned to a smaller, more feasible project: Metal Gear.
The Birth of Metal Gear
Released in 1987 for the MSX2, Metal Gear set a new standard for stealth-based games. Although Kojima’s original vision for Lost Warld never materialized, the success of Metal Gear launched his career and cemented his reputation as one of the most creative minds in the gaming industry.
