Section 31: Star Trek’s New Film Faces Uncertain Fan Reactions, Says Actor: “I Fear They Won’t See It as Star Trek”

MOVIE NEWS – A lead star of the latest installment in the legendary sci-fi saga admits to being nervous about how fans will perceive it: “I’m afraid they won’t see it as Star Trek.” As Section 31 approaches release, Trekkies remain skeptical.

In just over a month, Star Trek: Section 31 will premiere in Spain on SkyShowtime. This latest addition to the legendary franchise, while technically a TV movie rather than a blockbuster, has generated significant interest. Fans are curious whether this format can succeed in presenting standalone stories that expand the universe. However, the skepticism among Trekkies remains evident.

Robert Kazinsky, who is aware of fan concerns, recently admitted he’s apprehensive about how audiences will receive the Michelle Yeoh-led film. Speaking to SFX Magazine in an interview later shared by GamesRadar+, Kazinsky confessed:

“I’m nervous about how it will be received because this isn’t the type of Star Trek people want. The Star Trek everyone wants — and we all want — is a thousand more episodes of TNG. People are always upset there’s no more TNG, even though when it first aired [in the ’80s], everyone hated it. Now this comes out, and it’s unlike any Star Trek movie they’ve seen before. My concern was it wouldn’t feel like Star Trek at all, so hearing it still has that essence, even as a completely new take, reassures me. In ten years, I think we’ll look back and appreciate all of these Star Trek films.”

It’s true that The Next Generation and other Star Trek series initially struggled to capture audience interest, gradually winning fans over with improved scripts and engaging characters. However, with Section 31, the franchise seems intent on breaking away from tradition. The film’s tone appears closer to Guardians of the Galaxy than a typical Star Trek adventure.

So far, the teasers for this TV movie haven’t earned much praise from fans. However, it’s too soon to predict their reactions. Star Trek: Section 31 is slated to release on February 7 in Spain and January 31 in the US. The story follows Terran Emperor Philippa Georgiou as she joins a secret Fleet division to protect the Federation while confronting her dark past.

The reference to “a thousand more episodes of TNG” likely alludes to the frustration of some fans over Paramount’s decision not to greenlight Star Trek: Legacy, a rumored Picard sequel featuring Seven of Nine as captain of the USS Enterprise G. Instead, Paramount opted for two other projects: a comedy and a Starfleet Academy series.
