As highlighted by Mein-MMO, a Reddit user shared that their launch edition Steam Deck exploded on January 1st. After a trip, they noticed the battery had started swelling. Acting quickly, they removed the back cover to take out the battery and SSD. Despite placing the device in its carrying case, the situation escalated as the battery continued to expand and eventually exploded two hours later.

The Danger of Lithium-Ion Batteries

The explosion was traced to the lithium-ion battery, which may swell over time due to gases from incomplete chemical reactions. This issue isn’t limited to Valve’s console—it can affect any lithium-ion-powered device, such as smartphones, laptops, or home appliances. To stay safe, avoid using or charging a swollen battery and store it in a fireproof container. Under no circumstances should you puncture it, as the consequences could be severe.

The safest solution is to replace the damaged battery, a task that specialized repair shops can handle. Remember that lithium-ion batteries should never be disposed of in regular trash; instead, take them to designated recycling facilities or collection points.
