TECH NEWS – A camera-related bug has rendered the phone unusable after the user failed to follow the steps prescribed by the Cupertino company.
In December, iOS 18.2 was released, which seems to have broken the camera and flashlight on iPhones. Many users on Reddit and Twitter complained that the bugs appeared after installing the new OS update. According to one user, Cryptographer64, the camera on his iPhone sometimes doesn’t work and he only gets a black screen the first two or three times:
“Since I updated to iOS 18.2, my camera sometimes refuses to work. For example, when I try to use the camera app, it’s just a black screen. I have to reopen it 2-3 times to get it to work. Same with Snapchat, the camera just goes black and I have to restart the app once or twice to get it to work. My flashlight also refuses to work or is very slow to activate via the action button or control center sometimes, more often via the action button, it doesn’t work,” wrote Cryptographer64. Another user added, “Same here. I thought it was my phone at first, but looking at forums it seems to be happening with iOS 18.2. I just got my phone last weekend so I thought it was just my phone and was about to go back and replace it but it seems to be a software issue. I get the same black screen whether I use the camera control button, the camera icon, or from the lock screen.”

And for some people, it takes about 10 seconds to activate the flashlight, whereas before iOS 18.2, it was instant. If you go into Snapchat, for example, the camera won’t work and you’ll get a black screen until the camera is activated (which can take a while). A user contacted Apple about this and their customer support team recommended a factory reset of the iPhone. This was done and the device was destroyed. It is questionable whether the company will take responsibility, as they have not responded to the issue since.
“When you call Apple, they just give you the runaround and say it’s your car or your cable. I have been dealing with this for a week now and the last thing they told me to do was factory reset my phone. I did that and then an error occurred and now my phone is bricked and Apple says it’s my cable even though I’m using the cable that came with the phone. They are gaslighting customers on this issue until they have a fix for the worst update ever released,” said the unfortunate user.
Apple Intelligence requires 7GB of bad space on all devices. Previously, it was said that 4GB would be enough for the Cupertino-based AI functions, but the generative (content-creating) AI, which runs entirely locally, requires more space. The company is keen to adhere to strict privacy regulations, and with the new iOS update, users can now get support for Image Playground, Genmoji, Image Wand or ChatGPT, for example.
There’s more to come in iOS 18.3 and beyond.
