The team behind the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake, Virtuos, has reportedly been linked to a potential Oblivion remake. The unannounced project, built with Unreal Engine 5, may be in development for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.
Recent speculation stems from the LinkedIn profile of Oleksii Moskovchenko, technical art director at Virtuos in Shanghai. Although the project’s details remain under wraps, it has reignited discussions about a possible remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion from 2006.
In mid-2023, a Reddit user claiming to be a former Virtuos employee suggested that the studio was developing an Oblivion remake. According to the post, the game would use a “dual system” combining Unreal Engine 5 for graphics with the original Oblivion engine for gameplay and physics.
“For instance, new visuals are rendered using Unreal Engine 5, but much of the gameplay and mechanics still run on the Oblivion engine,” the source explained.
Later that year, leaked court documents from Bethesda’s internal plans included a mention of an Oblivion remaster as part of a roadmap for future releases.
Founded in 2004, Virtuos has become a prominent developer specializing in AAA support and adapting existing titles for new platforms. The studio’s portfolio includes work on major franchises such as Call of Duty, Tomb Raider, Dark Souls, BioShock, Battlefield, Uncharted, and Horizon. It is currently assisting Konami with the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake.
